The Kano State Government has concluded arrangements to conduct a mass wedding for 1,500 couples under its social welfare initiative known as Auren Gata. The Deputy Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Dr. Mujahideen Aminudeen, disclosed this in an interview on Thursday.

He noted that the programme is part of efforts to support vulnerable individuals who are willing to start family life. According to him, the initiative is being implemented under the leadership of Governor Abba Yusuf and has continued to gain momentum following the success of previous exercises.

He said, “The government has concluded all necessary plans to conduct the mass wedding, and His Excellency has directed that everything should be ready before the end of May.”

Aminudeen explained that the decision to organise another round of the programme was influenced by the positive outcomes recorded in earlier editions, which encouraged the government to commit more resources to sustain it. He added that the scheme is designed to promote social stability and provide support for individuals, especially those who may not have the means to get married on their own.

“The initiative is meant to help people settle down and build families in a responsible way, which in turn strengthens the society,” he said.

The Hisbah official stressed that participation in the programme is entirely voluntary, dismissing claims that the board forces individuals into marriage or selects beneficiaries without proper procedures.

“There is no element of force in this programme. It is based on the willingness and consent of both parties,” Aminudeen said. He explained that applicants must meet certain conditions, including obtaining approval from their parents or guardians and endorsement from relevant traditional leaders within their communities.

He also noted that intending couples must clearly express their readiness to live together as husband and wife before they can be considered for the programme. As part of the process, Aminudeen said all prospective couples would undergo medical screening to ensure compatibility and safeguard their health.

“The screening will include HIV tests, genotype checks, and other necessary examinations to ensure that the couples are medically fit,” he said.

He added that pregnancy tests would also be conducted for female applicants as part of measures to protect their dignity and well-being.”
