A 14-year-old student of the popular College of the Immaculate Conception, (CIC) Enugu, has reportedly drowned while trying to retrieve a bucket from the school’s water reservoir, causing grief and outrage among parents, students and members of the public.

The deceased, identified as Kosisochukwu (also referred to as Tochukwu) Nnamani, was said to have died after entering the reservoir during an attempt to recover a bucket used for fetching water in the boarding school.

Reports circulating on social media alleged that the tragic incident occurred after students were fetching water from the reservoir when the bucket fell inside. Some reports claimed the teenager was lowered into the reservoir with a rope tied around him before he eventually drowned.

The incident has triggered widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians questioning the safety conditions in boarding schools and the continued use of open reservoirs for water collection by students.

Videos and emotional tributes shared online showed students and sympathisers mourning the young boy, while calls intensified for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

As of the time of filing this report, the management of the school and authorities in Enugu State had yet to issue a detailed official statement on the incident.
