A human rights organization known as “Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC)” has expressed deep concern over the killing of a police officer, DSP Sani Isah, calling for justice to prevail.

In a statement signed by Okechukwu Nwanguma, Executive Director of RULAAC, made available to Daily News Nigeria on Sunday, stated that there should be public accountability for the killing of the law enforcement agent.

Parts of the statement further read:

“The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULLAC) expresses deep concern over the killing of DSP Sani Isah of Hotoro Division, Kano State, who was reportedly shot dead on May 20, 2026, while attempting to disperse a clash involving rival thugs in Kano.

“According to media reports, DSP Sani Isah, who was only three weeks away from retirement after more than 30 years of service in the Nigeria Police Force, was shot by one of the thugs armed with a dane gun during the operation. He was rushed to the hospital but was later confirmed dead.

“RULAAC is disturbed not only by the tragic killing of the officer, but also by the apparent lack of urgency and transparency in the response of the relevant authorities. As of the time the reports were published, there had been no widely publicized announcement of arrests, no detailed briefing on investigative efforts, and no strong public assurance that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

“This silence is troubling and reinforces growing concerns about selective outrage and selective accountability in Nigeria. Justice must not depend on whether an incident trends on social media or attracts viral public attention. Every life lost to violence deserves equal concern and equal commitment to accountability.

“DSP Sani Isah died in active service while carrying out his lawful duty to maintain public order and protect lives and property. His family has now been deprived of a husband, father, and breadwinner only days before his retirement. The least the authorities owe him, and his family is a credible, transparent, and determined pursuit of justice.

“RULAAC therefore calls on the Inspector-General of Police and the Kano State Commissioner of Police to immediately:

  1. Provide the public with clear information on the status of investigations into the killing of DSP Sani Isah;
  2. Ensure the prompt arrest and prosecution of all persons responsible for the attack;
  3. Provide adequate welfare, compensation, and institutional support to the family of the deceased officer; and
  4. Take decisive steps to address the growing menace of violent thuggery and proliferation of weapons in parts of Kano State.

“The continued normalization of violence against both citizens and law enforcement officers undermines public safety, weakens confidence in state institutions, and emboldens criminal elements.

“RULAAC reiterates that accountability and justice must be consistent, impartial, and independent of media virality or political convenience.
