A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Enugu State, on Thursday, elected Hon. Dona Nwogbo as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

Returning officer for the election in the state, Dr. Yarima Idachaba, who announced the results of the primary elections that included the national and state assembly positions expressed satisfaction in the turnout of the elections without violence.

The State Chairman of the party, Hon. Steve Oruruo, said the process was the culmination of direct primaries held across wards in the state. He described the exercise as a “glamorous outing” and a reflection of the quality the PDP seeks to present.

“What happened today was the final collation of the PDP primaries, which emanated from different wards via direct primaries. It was a glamorous outing that marked the end of elections in terms of primaries,” Oruruo said.

He added that the process was conducted without rancour and with a sense of equity and fairness, arguing that the quality of leadership recruitment determines the quality of governance.

“The warped values and poor leadership threats that we have witnessed over the years are just mere products of bad primaries of parties. Today we have presented a primary devoid of rancour, quarrel, and skirmishes,” he said.

Oruruo also addressed the leadership of the party in Enugu, stating that the PDP had not experienced a crisis in the state. He cited a court judgment and a Supreme Court ruling affirming that the Board of Trustees, BOT, led by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, controls the PDP.

“Enugu has never had any crisis in the PDP. The leadership of this party exists courtesy of the court, which secured a judgment that has never been vacated in the high court,” he said.

“Beyond this, the Supreme Court nailed it in the final judgement and clearly made it very visible that it is the BOT led by former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, that controls the PDP, and that leadership has since appointed leaders at the national level to man positions in the PDP, and they are in charge of the processes today. So any other thing violates the law and is tantamount to nullity before the law.”

He warned that any process contrary to the Supreme Court’s position would be “null and void and of no effect.”
