The Member representing Ahiazu Mbaise/Ezinihitte Mbaise Federal Constituency in the Lower Chamber of Nigeria’s National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emeka Martins Chinedu has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day.
Rt.Hon. Chinedu, while joining millions of Nigerians in marking this year’s “June 12”, as the chosen day for celebrating democracy, insisted that the date occupies a defining place in Nigeria’s political history, not only as a “reminder of democratic struggle, but also as a reference point for representation, legitimacy, and popular will.”
In a statement issued on Friday by his media Officer, Nnamdi Ukasanya, the legislator also described democracy as “humanity’s most profound affirmation of equal voice and shared citizenship.”
Chinedu explained that democracy derives its strength not from institutional form alone, but also from the “alignment between public authority and public trust.” He emphasised that governance only gains meaning when it reflects the consent and aspirations of the people.
According to the lawmaker, “Democracy remains humanity’s most profound expression of the belief that every voice matters and every citizen counts.” Throwing more light on what ought to constitute democratic engagement, Chinedu stressed that “Democracy Day serves as a reminder that democratic systems are sustained through shared responsibility between leaders and citizens, both of whom must remain committed to accountability and civic engagement.”
The lawmakers, therefore, pleaded with Nigerians to deepen their commitment to peace, unity, and active citizenship, stressing that “no democracy can thrive without tolerance, dialogue, and respect for the rule of law.”
Reaffirming his legislative focus, Chinedu pledged continued “commitment to effective representation and people-centred legislation aimed at improving living standards, expanding opportunities, and strengthening social and economic wellbeing across his constituency and the nation.”
As if peeping into the nation’s political future, the lawmakers said he was hopeful about Nigeria’s democratic future, adding that despite present challenges, the country’s history reflects a consistent capacity for renewal driven by the resilience and aspirations of its people.
“As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, Rt. Hon. Chinedu urged renewed confidence in democratic ideals and a collective resolve to strengthen institutions that guarantee justice, inclusion, and national cohesion,” Ukasanya, referencing the national legislator, said in the statement.
