Explosion Causes Power Outage In Parts Of Enugu – MEDL

MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has attributed the current power failure being witnessed in some parts of the Enugu Capital territory to an explosion at the Gariki Injection Substation.

A press release issued Friday night by Mr. Emeka Ezeh, Head, Communications, MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), indicated that the incident occurred “today, Friday, 17 July 2026, at about 7:30 p.m., and affected the indoor 11kV breaker at the injection substation.

Ezeh said in the press release that the MEDL “wishes to inform its esteemed customers served by the Army and Gariki 11kV feeders that the ongoing power outage is due to an explosion at the Gariki Injection Substation.

According to the company’s Head of Communications the “areas currently affected by this outage include: “Army 11kV Feeder: Army Barracks, One Day Road, Meniru & Upper Meniru, and Joe Continental.

“Gariki 11kV Feeder: Gariki Market, Mayor Market, Roban Stores (Agbani Road), Crunchies (Agbani Road), Mobile Police Barrack, Amechi Road, Upper Mount, Ikiriki, Emeka Ebila, Ozalla Street, Egbonnaji, Nnaji Ogbodo, Idaw River, Igbariam Street, Liberation, Mount, Umuchu, Achina, Vance, Unubi, Enugu Agidi, Amawbia, Amokwe, Kenneth, Amah, and Hill Crest.”

Commenting on the attempts being made to fix the challenge, Eze said that the company’s technical team “is currently carrying out a comprehensive assessment of the damage and has commenced the necessary restoration efforts to ensure power supply is restored to the affected areas as quickly as possible.”

He said that the electricity distribution firm is unhappy about the ugly development. “MEDL sincerely regrets the inconvenience this incident has caused our esteemed customers and appeals for patience and cooperation as it works to restore the electricity supply,” Ezeh reassured.
