Not less than 30 people have been confirmed dead after suspected gunmen attacked Naridon Village in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Sunday night. The attackers reportedly killed several women and children and set numerous homes ablaze, leaving the community devastated.
Two residents, Ibrahim John and Mallam Katuka, confirmed the incident in separate WhatsApp messages to SaharaReporters. According to residents, at least 30 bodies have been recovered, with fears that the death toll could rise as search and recovery efforts continue. Photographs from the village show widespread destruction, with many houses completely burnt.
Authorities are yet to confirm the number of people injured or displaced, as assessment of the full impact of the attack is still ongoing.
The latest violence has heightened concerns over the worsening security situation in Kauru and other parts of Southern Kaduna. Residents and community leaders have called on the Kaduna State Government, the Federal Government and security agencies to deploy more personnel and take decisive action to prevent further attacks.
The incident comes amid a fresh wave of violence and kidnappings across Southern Kaduna. On Friday, SaharaReporters reported that at least eight people linked to two groups of hostages abducted from Ariko and Awon villages in Kachia Local Government Area died while in captivity.
According to journalist and former Kaduna State Government spokesperson, Reuben Buhari, seven of the victims were among those abducted from Ariko village, while the eighth was a newborn baby delivered by a woman kidnapped from neighbouring Awon village.
The victims reportedly died after spending more than three months in captivity under harsh conditions, underscoring the worsening insecurity and humanitarian crisis in the area.
