The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Mamman Giwa, has advised young people to be focused on their studies, law-abiding, and worthy ambassadors of their families and professions. Giwa advised during an interactive session with legal interns from Obra Legal Law Practice, Enugu.
He stressed discipline, proactive policing and crime-fighting, as well as the legal framework governing the use of firearms under the Constitution, the Nigeria Police Act, 2020 (as amended), and Force Order 237. He also explained the role of security patrols and stop-and-search operations in crime prevention.
The Commissioner said that police officers had no right to search citizens’ phones during such operations except “where a phone is lawfully subject to an investigation”. Giwa urged youths and the public to promptly report acts of police misconduct or unprofessionalism, assuring that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken against any officer found culpable.
He said: “As part of activities marking the 2026 International Youth Day (IYD), I congratulate the youths of Enugu State and urge them to remain focused, law-abiding, and committed to their aspirations. I am cautioning you, youths, against cultism, social, economic, and political vices, and other forms of criminality.
“I urge youths who are eligible to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate responsibly in the 2027 General Elections. Don’t be used by politicians as political thugs or agents of violence and electoral malpractice, as offenders will face the legal consequences of their actions.”
The Commissioner also invited youths to the official launch of the Nigeria Police Force National Campaign Against Political and Digital Thuggery and a Police-Youth Dialogue scheduled for Aug. 22 in the state. The event is part of activities also marking International Youth Day 2026 and the Nigeria Police Force National Youth Leadership and Security Initiative, aimed at promoting peaceful, free and fair 2027 General Elections,” he said.
The team, led by Mr Daniel Aloh, Senior Associate at Obra Legal Law Practice, thanked the commissioner for the opportunity to engage with youths on policing and legal issues. Aloh commended the command’s security efforts and assured that the interns would apply the knowledge gained from the engagement and continue to support lawful policing.
