A video has surfaced online showing some governors and chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC), leaving Osun State after the party suffered defeat in Saturday’s governorship election.

The development came shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), declared Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party the winner of the election. The APC had mobilised several of its governors and national leaders to Osun State ahead of the poll in support of its candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.

However, despite the high-profile campaign by the ruling party, Adeleke defeated Oyebamiji to secure a second term in office. INEC’s Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, declared Adeleke the winner on Sunday morning.

Adeleke polled 511,067 votes to defeat Oyebamiji, who secured 444,815 votes. Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, came third with 17,180 votes.

NewsBits reports that 15 political parties contested the election, with the Accord, APC and ADC emerging as the top three contenders. The video showing the departure of APC governors and chieftains from the state has since surfaced online following the party’s defeat.
