The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Plateau State University, Bokkos chapter, has declared a total and indefinite strike over what it described as the university management’s failure to satisfactorily resolve its six-point demands.
The decision was taken on Wednesday at the union’s congress meeting, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university administration on August 11. In a statement signed by the chapter’s Chairperson, Vincent D. Choji, and Secretary, Lomka Kopdiya, the union said none of its major concerns had been adequately addressed despite the expiration of the deadline.
Among the issues raised by the lecturers is the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme for staff, as well as the full implementation of the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and ASUU. The union is also demanding the payment of outstanding arrears arising from the agreement, dating back to January 1, 2026.
Other demands include the provision of secure and habitable staff accommodation, construction of trenches along the university’s perimeter fence to improve security, and an end to what the union termed intimidation of its leaders. The lecturers are further seeking payment of 22 months’ outstanding arrears relating to the 25/35 per cent wage award.
The union said its congress reviewed the situation after the ultimatum elapsed and concluded that the administration had not done enough to resolve the issues. “Congress is convinced that the substance of our demands on all six items has not been satisfactorily addressed,” the statement said.
According to the union, the decision to embark on the industrial action followed approval from the National Executive Council of ASUU. It subsequently directed all academic staff under the chapter to withdraw their services and suspend academic activities indefinitely until further notice.
