Two people have lost their lives after a machete-wielding man attacked Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX in Lekki, Lagos State. The violent attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday, August 29, 2026.
While the cause of the incident remains unknown, the machete-wielding man reportedly attacked Filmhouse security personnel who prevented him from gaining entry into the facility, as well as another individual present at the scene.
Buchi Laba, a Nigerian sports journalist with Wazobia FM who witnessed the tragic incident, said, “It was one of the worst scenes I have ever seen.”
Speaking on X, he wrote: “Went to watch ‘Odyssey’ at IMAX Filmhouse Cinema, Lekki, yesterday. The movie started at 10:00pm and ended around 2:00am. Immediately I came out, there was a huge crowd outside with blood everywhere.
“A guy came into the place and stabbed two security men, one in the chest and the other in the back. It was crazy. I had to use my car to take them to the hospital and, sadly, one of the security men died. We also heard that the guy who did the stabbing died at the cinema.”
Confirming the incident on its official Instagram and X accounts, Filmhouse Group said, “Filmhouse Group is deeply saddened by a security incident that took place outside the premises.” The group further acknowledged the courage of the victims in confronting the attacker.
“Both individuals stood between danger and the people in their care, and it is through their bravery that the situation was contained and safety restored. Their commitment and courage in that moment will not be forgotten,” the statement added.
