It all began like a routine Saturday morning traffic compliance check but suddenly escalated into a scene of vehicular destruction and public violence on the busy Owerri Road axis within Enugu metropolis.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. near the popular ABC Transport terminal, left several official transport monitors nursing severe injuries after an enraged crowd took the law into their hands.
Eyewitnesses said the ordeal began when 26-year-old Ikenna Ani, an indigene of Amankanu, allegedly beat a red traffic signal while driving a luxury Mercedes-Benz ML 350. Spotting the infraction, field officers from the Enugu State Traffic Management Authority (ESTMA) immediately flagged down the vehicle to enforce compliance.
However, rather than pulling over to account for the traffic breach, Ani reportedly panicked upon sighting the enforcement officers and made a desperate attempt to evade arrest. The high-speed evasion quickly went awry within meters of the terminal as Ani lost control of his Mercedes-Benz, violently crashing into a stationary Lexus LX 350.
The loud impact of the collision instantly drew a massive crowd of motorists, street vendors, and commuters who were present around the transit hub. Regrettably, the chaotic scene turned volatile when an unprovoked mob formed, misinterpreting the cause of the accident and directing their hostility toward the pursuing traffic officers.
Before security operatives could intervene, several bystanders descended heavily on the ESTMA personnel, beating some of the duty officers to a state of near unconsciousness. A contingent of police officers eventually arrived at the scene, restoring public order and taking Ani into custody to prevent further mob escalation.
Ani’s family members subsequently intervened at the police facility, making passionate appeals on his behalf to facilitate his release and resolve the damage caused by the accident. While undergoing police questioning, a visibly shaken Ikenna Ani expressed deep remorse for his reckless driving and the chaos that ensued from his actions.
Ani admitted to his error, offering a solemn promise to maintain good conduct and adhere strictly to all road safety regulations going forward.” I am sorry for my actions on Saturday. I wasn’t myself, and I can’t really say exactly what happened and how it happened. I regret my actions, and I am willing to pay for every damage caused by my actions or inaction on Saturday”. Ani stated.
Reflecting on the unfortunate incident, community stakeholders and transport observers have reiterated the need for motorists to treat traffic managers as allies rather than adversaries.
They emphasized that ESTMA officials exist to protect lives and maintain order, urging the public to refrain from jungle justice and instead view traffic authorities as genuine partners in progress.
