Credible journalism, responsible media practice, fact-checking, and public awareness will play a critical role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and safeguarding the integrity of her information environment.
A United States-based Nigerian Attorney and International businessman, Dr. Damasus Nwachukwu, Esq asserted in an Appreciation Letter for the Invitation to the Nigeria Press Council Summit & Excellence Awards 2026.
NewsBits reports that the Nigerian Press Council (NPC) had listed Dr Nwachukwu among the deserving and distinguished Nigerians to be honoured for their various positive contributions to the socio-economic growth and development of their communities, humanity and the country generally.
Dr Nwachukwu, who is a philanthropist and the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Damasus Group LLC said that the theme of the Summit, ‘Combating Fake News, Misinformation,’ “is both timely and highly relevant, especially as Nigeria continues to prepare for the 2027 general elections.”
He said that he firmly believed that “transparent communication, accountable governance, and an informed citizenry are indispensable foundations for sustainable development.” Nwachukwu’s letter, which was sent to the NPC via email, reads:
“Appreciation for the Invitation to the Nigerian Press Council Summit & Excellence Awards 2026. Dear Nigerian Press Council Members, I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the kind invitation to the Nigerian Press Council Summit & Excellence Awards 2026.
“I am deeply honored by the recognition and by the confidence reposed in me through this distinguished invitation. I consider the Summit particularly important, given the critical role that credible journalism, responsible media practice, fact-checking, and public awareness play in strengthening our democracy and safeguarding the integrity of our information environment.
“The theme of the Summit, “Combating Fake News, Misinformation,” is both timely and highly relevant, especially as Nigeria continues to prepare for the 2027 general elections. Initiatives that promote ethical journalism, media responsibility, digital literacy, and informed civic engagement are essential to building a more trustworthy and resilient society.
“These are values that align closely with my vision for public service and with the leadership I hope to offer the people of Imo State in the years ahead. I firmly believe that transparent communication, accountable governance, and an informed citizenry are indispensable foundations for sustainable development.
“I commend the Nigerian Press Council and all the stakeholders involved for creating a platform that brings these important issues to the forefront. Regrettably, due to my current commitments outside Nigeria, I will not be able to attend the event in person. However, I am pleased to confirm that I will be represented at the ceremony by a representative who will attend and receive the recognition on my behalf.
“Please accept my heartfelt gratitude for this distinguished honour. I am truly appreciative of the opportunity to be associated with such an important national initiative, and I extend my best wishes to the organizers, participants, and all award recipients for a successful and impactful Summit.
