The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, has selected renowned businessman and philanthropist, Chief Bernard Okwudili Edeh, alias Nardo or Nardo na South, for its 2026 Philanthropic Award in recognition of his contributions to community development and humanitarian services.
Edeh, Chairman of Nardo Group, is being honoured for his interventions in improving the welfare of residents, particularly in his hometown of Akpugo, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
His contributions include the construction of the 1.9-kilometre Ugwuagba-Achikpa-Onicha Agu Road, an asphalted project executed by his company in support of rural development initiatives.
Beyond infrastructure, the philanthropist is also recognised for his humanitarian interventions, including providing accommodation for less-privileged members of the community, supporting widows and financing various community welfare programmes.
The NUJ recognition underscores the importance of individuals who deploy their resources and influence to address community needs and improve the living conditions of vulnerable people.
The Chairman of the NUJ Enugu State Council, Comrade Obinna Ogbuka, said the award was designed to recognise individuals whose contributions to society have made meaningful differences in the lives of the people.
He noted that philanthropy should go beyond financial donations to include sustainable interventions that provide lasting solutions to community challenges. He said that Edeh’s contributions to infrastructure and social welfare demonstrate the importance of private-sector participation in grassroots development.
The award forms part of activities lined up for the 2026 NUJ Press Week and Press Day celebration scheduled for Thursday, November 5, 2026, at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Enugu.
The event, expected to attract journalists, media executives, government officials and other prominent personalities, will feature the theme: “Media Accountability and the Future of Democratic Trust: Confronting the Crisis of Confidence Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Elections.”
Edeh’s recognition highlights the role of philanthropy and responsible private-sector investment in complementing government efforts towards rural development, social inclusion, and improved community welfare.
