Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, is set to defect to the African Democratic Congress, ADC. He disclosed this on Tuesday, stating that the ADC is the viable option for the opposition ahead of the 2027 general election.

The governor’s decision came after Kano political heavyweight Rabiu Kwankwaso left the NNPP for the ADC. Mohammed spoke when he received a delegation from the ADC, led by a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, at the Government House, Bauchi.

According to him, the ADC’s national chairman, Senator David Mark, had already extended an olive branch, inviting him to join the party. The Governor stated that his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is currently headless, and regretted that all efforts to reconcile differences within the party have failed.

He confirmed being under pressure from his supporters to explore other options available to him. “We have found ourselves in a very serious ambivalence where our party is headless. We have to find a place within the opposition.

“That is where our fate and political destiny are taking us. And ADC appears to be a very enduring and acceptable platform,” he said. Governor Mohammed emphasized that the decision to join the ADC is not taken lightly, because the party’s structure and leadership make it an attractive option.

He said that discussions are ongoing and that the ADC is the preferred destination, but other options are being explored. Babachir Lawal, who led the ADC delegation, said the party’s national chairman, Senator David Mark, sent them to Bauchi to invite Governor Mohammed to join the ADC, citing his leadership qualities and experience.

Lawal warned that Nigeria faces disaster if the current government continues in power beyond 2027, emphasizing the need for opposition parties to unite and challenge the APC.

“We are here in Bauchi today at the instance of our National Chairman, Senator David Mark. Senator Mark sent us here because he’s fully aware that the coming battle between us in 2027 to elect new people to lead Nigeria can only be successful if all the various segments of the country that have good intentions and goodwill towards Nigerians are able to unite to stand and resist the impending disaster that is waiting for us in 2027,” Lawal said.

NewsBits reports that with Governor Mohammed’s decision, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, is the last man standing in the PDP. However, it is also believed that he is on his way out of the “umbrella party.”
