The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Reverend Callistus Onaga, has expressed deep concerns over what he regarded as attempts to build Caliphate in the entire Nigeria.
In his Easter message, while reiterating his worry over the “attempts to institute caliphates across Nigeria,” Onaga lamented that “it is clear that the country is facing persecution at various levels.”
The bishop called on leaders, including the President Bola Tinubu and the governors, to be “sensitive to the sufferings of the people and to work towards making life easier for them.” He emphasized the need for responsible leadership and for leaders to match their words with actions.
He, however, pleaded with Nigerians to draw strength from their faith amidst global crises and local challenges. Bishop Onaga emphasized the importance of hope and individual actions in making a positive difference.
He said that the world is facing numerous challenges, including the war in Ukraine, economic difficulties, and terrorism in Nigeria. Bishop Onaga reminded Christians that Easter is a celebration of hope, and that Jesus Christ’s resurrection is a testament to the power of faith.
He urged Nigerians to make efforts to make hope possible, individually and collectively, by living out their faith and values. Bishop Onaga also addressed the media, urging them to be truthful and responsible in their reporting.
He cautioned against spreading falsehood and exaggerating evil, stating that the media has a significant impact on people’s lives. The bishop emphasized the importance of individual actions in making a positive difference, stating that every Nigerian has some level of control and can contribute to making hope possible.
He urged Nigerians to work together to address the country’s challenges and to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ with a clear conscience.
