The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has approved an upward review of the admission quota for the University of Nigeria Medical School, raising its carrying capacity from 180 to 400 students.
The approval, granted on March 27, 2026, follows a rigorous re-accreditation exercise and months of preparation by the University, according to a statement issued by the University.
NewsBits reports that with the new approval, the University of Nigeria now holds the highest approved quota for medical training in the country, marking a significant milestone in its academic and professional development.
The increase in quota is expected to enhance access to medical education and contribute to addressing the growing need for healthcare professionals in Nigeria, the statement also explained.
The statement indicated that the decision “is a result of an appeal by the University Management led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, requesting an increase in the institution’s admission capacity.”
In the appeal, the University Management relied on the recently upgraded training facilities and the surge in demand from qualified candidates seeking admission into the Faculty of Clinical Sciences.
The appeal prompted the MDCN team to visit the University a few weeks ago for an on-site assessment of the facilities. “We had more than the basic facilities and human resources the Council required for the review”, said Professor Christopher Bismarck Eke, the Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences. Eke expressed gratitude to stakeholders who contributed to the achievement.
He said: “We extend our sincere appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, the leadership of the College of Medicine, UNN, our alumni, staff, and students whose dedication and support made this achievement possible.”
