Tragedy has again happened some minutes’ drive into the Enugu metropolis, capital of Enugu State, as an auto crash occurred along Ugwu Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, which involved a trailer and a petrol-laden tanker.
The trailer reportedly belonging to Dangote fleet was said to have developed a brake failure and rammed into the tanker. One person was said to have died on the spot, while some others were injured.
Although reports said that three people died during the accident, the officials of the Road Safety Commission (FRSC) confirmed that only one life was lost. The Route Commander Theophilus Okoduwa, FRSC, Enugu State Sector Command Public Education Officer, confirmed on Tuesday in Enugu.
The incident, which took place on Monday at about 5:15 p.m. and involved two articulated vehicles, according to Okoduwa. He said that the vehicles involved in the accident are a Howo Truck loaded with bags of cement and a MAN Diesel Truck conveying Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
Okoduwa pointed out that only one person lost his life in the fatal accident involving four males. He noted that the injured in the accident were rushed to nearby medical facilities for prompt medical attention.
“The FRSC alerted the State and Federal Fire Service officials on time, just a few minutes before the accident occurred.
“They arrived on time and wetted the whole area with special liquid, which ensures no outbreak of fire,” he said.
The FRSC officer noted that the cause of the accident was yet unknown as the investigation is ongoing. It was, however, gathered that soldiers stationed near the spot of the accident also joined in rescuing survivors from the wreckage of the accident.
