Ohaa
The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, on Saturday visited the victims of the Obuoffia political gathering attack, where many NDC party faithful, sustained gunshot injuries following an attack by hoodlums.
Recall that the party faithful were having their meeting oblivious of a looming danger when, all of a sudden, thugs invaded the meeting venue and disrupted the gathering, leaving many wounded. Touched by the unwholesome and gory incident, empathising with the victims, Ohaa said that no political ambition is worth bloodshed.
His dirge goes thus: “My dear brothers and sisters, Today, I visited our brothers and sisters receiving treatment following the violent attack on our ward meeting at Ihuani Awkunanaw, Obuoffia, Nkanu West Local Government Area, on September 12, 2026.
I did not go to the hospital simply as the Governorship Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). I went as a brother, as a son of Nkanu, and as a fellow citizen of Enugu whose heart is deeply wounded by what happened. I looked into the eyes of people who went to a political meeting peacefully and returned with gunshot wounds.
- No political disagreement should ever lead to this
- No ambition is worth the blood of an Enugu citizen.
According to our party’s account, eight members sustained gunshot injuries in the attack. The Enugu State Police Command has also confirmed that the meeting was disrupted by armed men and has ordered an investigation into the incident. Whatever the final findings of the investigation may be, one thing is already clear:
- Violence must never become a language of politics in Enugu State.
And this concern goes beyond one political party. Reports of disruptions involving other political gatherings in Nkanu West on the same day, including the incident at St. Joseph Primary School, Agbani, make the situation even more disturbing and deserving of urgent attention from our security agencies and political leaders.
We must not allow Nkanuland, or Enugu State, to become a place where citizens are afraid to attend political meetings, express their opinions, or participate in democracy.
To The Victims
To every one of our wounded brothers and sisters lying in these hospital beds, I want you to hear me clearly: You are not alone. I have seen your wounds. I have heard your stories. I have seen the fear and pain in your eyes. On behalf of my family, I want to personally assure you that we will stand with you.
We will take responsibility for your medical care and every necessary obligation connected to your treatment and recovery. You should not have to worry about medical bills while you fight to regain your health. Your only responsibility now is to heal. To your families, I say: Stay strong. Your loved ones are not forgotten. Enugu has not forgotten you.
To Our Security Agencies
I call on the Nigeria Police Force and all relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the Obuoffia incident and every related act of political violence. Those responsible should be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law, regardless of their political affiliation or connections. We need justice, but we also need prevention. We cannot wait for another citizen to be shot before we take action.
To Our Political Leaders
This is bigger than NDC. It is bigger than PDP, Labour Party, APC, or any other political organisation. Today, it may be an NDC meeting. Tomorrow, it could be another party. If we allow violence to become normal, eventually every political gathering becomes a potential danger zone.
I therefore appeal to our former governors, traditional rulers, religious leaders, elder statesmen, political leaders, civil society organisations and all people of conscience across Enugu State: Speak up!
Let us collectively draw a line against political violence.
Let us disagree without killing.
Let us campaign without intimidation.
Let us compete without bloodshed.
To Those Who Seek To Intimidate The People
We will not answer violence with violence. We will not encourage revenge. We will not allow anger to destroy the peace we are seeking to protect. Our response will be courage, lawful action, unity, and an unwavering commitment to democracy. The people of Enugu deserve to participate in politics without fear.
They deserve to attend meetings without wondering whether they will return home safely. They deserve a government that values every human life. That is the Enugu we must build together. From May 29, 2027, our commitment will be to building a state where security, justice, dignity, and opportunity are not privileges reserved for a few, but rights enjoyed by every citizen. Enugu must not bleed for politics.
Nkanuland must not become a theatre of political violence. Every life matters. Every citizen matters. Every vote must be protected. To our wounded brothers and sisters: heal quickly. To your families: remain strong. To the people of Enugu: do not lose hope. And to those who believe that violence can silence the voice of the people, let the message be clear:
The answer to violence is not more violence. The answer is justice, courage, unity, and the rule of law. May God heal our wounded, comfort their families, guide our leaders, protect every citizen of Enugu State, and give us the wisdom to choose peace over hatred.
