Several houses belonging to peasant farmers in the agrarian community of Amaegbu, Akaeze, in the Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, have collapsed, as farmlands and crops were also submerged after devastating floodwater ravaged the area.
The disaster had displaced several households in the community, while properties worth billions of naira were also lost.
NewsBits also gathered that the flood affected more than fifty families, leaving them without shelter and means of livelihood.
Reacting to the incident, during a visit to the area, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, Dr. Ifeanyi Odii, said the flood had caused extensive damage to homes, crops, farmlands, and other personal belongings of inhabitants of the community.
He made a cash donation of five million naira to the victims and urged them to use the money judiciously to cushion the effect of the disaster on their families. The PDP stalwart further promised to engage relevant agencies of the state and Federal Governments on the situation, with a view to securing further assistance for the affected residents.
According to him, “I am not happy with the development. I have been hearing about it. We are here to console you and show you that we are human beings.
“By the grace of God, when we are in government by next year, we will do more. We are going to call on government after our assistance. When we assuthe me office, we are going to find a permanent solution to the situation. We will reach out to the state and Federal Governments concerning it.”
The PDP Chairman in Ivo Local Government Area, Mr. Johnson Dike, appealed to the victims to remain calm, adding that the party would continue to support efforts to provide relief to them.
Expressing their feelings on the incident, the people of the community appealed to the Ebonyi State Government and relevant agencies to urgently intervene, pointing out that many families had been left helpless.
