Security operatives in Borno have arrested a teenage suspect in connection with a deadly attack in Borno State, authorities confirmed on Monday.

The suspect, identified as a 17-year-old male (name withheld due to age), was apprehended by troops of the Nigerian Army in a coordinated operation carried out on the outskirts of Maiduguri.

According to military intel, the arrest followed intelligence reports linking the teenager to a recent assault on a local community, which left several residents dead and properties destroyed. The attack has been attributed to suspected members of Boko Haram, which has continued to launch sporadic attacks in the North East.

Arise news said that a senior officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity said, “Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect played a role in facilitating the attack by conveying information and supplies to the terrorists. He was arrested during a clearance operation by our troops.”

Residents of the affected community had earlier raised alarm over increased movements of unfamiliar young persons in the area prior to the attack. Meanwhile, the Borno State Police Command confirmed the arrest, noting that the suspect is currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations.

Spokesman of the Command, ASP Kenneth Dawson, said: “The suspect will be profiled and handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action in line with the law.” Security agencies have reiterated their commitment to intensifying operations aimed at flushing out insurgents and restoring lasting peace in the region.”
