The engine of justice in Enugu State practically came to a halt as court workers enforced an outright industrial action, locking down key judicial facilities across the state capital.
From the early hours of Wednesday, the usually bustling Hon. Justice J.C.N. Ngwu Judiciary Headquarters Complex stood deserted, with heavy padlocks securing its main entrance gates.
A bold, printed banner draped across the front perimeter fence delivered an unmistakable directive to litigants, legal practitioners, and visitors: “WORKERS ON STRIKE – KEEP OFF.”
The complete shutdown turned away attorneys, litigants with pending matters, and administrative personnel at the perimeter gates. Inside the vast judicial compound, empty driveways and deserted corridors replaced the usual morning bustle of lawyers preparing briefs and court registrars filing case rosters.
The industrial action affected all administrative and judicial departments hosted within the complex, leaving scheduled hearings and rulings suspended indefinitely. Among the affected facilities was the modern Enugu State Multi-Door Courthouse, a key alternative dispute resolution facility commissioned under former Governor Rt. Hon. Dr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
Even glass doors leading into the Multi-Door Courthouse were firmly locked with heavy-duty padlocks, preventing access to mediation and arbitration suites.
Reporters monitoring the situation on-site described the scene as an unprecedented shutdown of essential civic institutions.
”What we are witnessing today is a complete halt of the machinery of law,” a lawyer noted while observing the padlocked gates. “Every entrance is chained, and not a single legal proceeding is going forward.”
”When the judiciary shuts down, the rights of citizens are placed on hold,” the lawyer later identified as Ifebuche added. He stressed the far-reaching legal and social consequences of the industrial dispute. Ifebuchi said: “Pre-trial detainees, commercial disputes, and urgent injunctions are all caught in the crossfire.”
Lawyers coming to the complex expressed frustration over the sudden disruption to the legal calendar.
“Client matters that have been scheduled for months are now hanging in the balance,” one senior legal scholar remarked outside the gated perimeter. “While worker grievances must be addressed, the complete closure of the court system creates an immense backlog for the justice system.”
Efforts to reach local union representatives at the scene confirmed that the industrial action remains total and indefinite until all outstanding demands are addressed by state authorities. Union coordinators maintained that prolonged negotiations had yielded insufficient progress, leaving industrial action as the only viable mechanism to demand redress.
