Hundreds of angry youths reportedly staged a violent protest in Gwarzo on Sunday, setting part of a government building on fire over rising insecurity in the area. The protest happened in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State after repeated attacks by suspected bandits reportedly left residents living in fear.
Reports say the demonstration began peacefully as youths marched through major streets, chanting slogans and calling on the government to take urgent action to address the security situation. The protesters later moved to the Local Government Secretariat, where the protest turned violent after some youths allegedly entered parts of the premises by force.
Part of the building was eventually set ablaze, with thick smoke seen rising into the air as residents and passers-by fled the area for safety. One resident blamed the unrest on growing frustration stemming from constant attacks and what many described as a weak security response.
“People are tired of sleeping in fear. The attacks have become too frequent, and there is no strong response. That is why the youths reacted this way,” the resident said.
Another resident urged the youths to remain calm, saying destruction of public property would not solve the problem.
“We understand the frustration, but violence will not solve the problem. What we need is dialogue and urgent security action,” the resident stated.
Security personnel were later deployed across Gwarzo to restore calm and prevent further violence, while authorities reportedly began investigating the incident. The police are yet to make comments as of press time.
